Ubuntu uses the 5th field (comment field) in the /etc/password for full name
and other info.

$ cat /etc/passwd | grep dennis

# cat /etc/passwd | grep dennis | cut -d: -f5

To change your full name:
$ sudo chfn -f "Paul McCartney" dennis
$ cat /etc/passwd | grep dennis
dennis:x:1000:1000:Paul McCartney,,,:/home/dennis:/bin/bash
Ubuntu also uses the 5th field for other info:
$ chfn
